Help with BarnKeeper

Questions, problems, and how to reach a person.

Get in touch

BarnKeeper is made by one person, so you will be writing to me rather than to a queue. I answer every message, usually within a day or two.

It helps enormously if you can include your barn name, your role in the barn, and a screenshot of whatever went wrong. A picture of the screen you are stuck on is usually worth more than a paragraph describing it.

Subscriptions and billing

How do plans work?

Your first horse is free, forever. Both paid plans include every feature and unlimited members; the only difference is how many horses they hold: Shed Row covers up to four, Stable is unlimited. You can change plan whenever your barn changes, and you will not lose any records by moving between them.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple, not by BarnKeeper, so they are cancelled in your Apple Account rather than in the app. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, choose BarnKeeper, then Cancel. Access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Can I get a refund?

Because Apple handles the payment, refunds go through Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account. I have no way to issue a refund for an App Store purchase myself, though I am glad to help you work out what happened.

What happens when my free month ends?

Your barn becomes an archive. Every record you have entered stays readable for as long as your account exists, and BarnKeeper stops accepting new entries until you subscribe. Nothing is deleted, and subscribing later picks up exactly where you left off.

Deleting my account did not cancel my subscription

That is correct, and it catches people out. Deleting your BarnKeeper account removes your records, but the subscription lives in your Apple Account and keeps renewing until you cancel it there. Cancel first, then delete.

Your barn and the people in it

What can each role do?

Owner runs the barn, manages members and billing, and can do everything. Admin can do everything except billing. Horse Owner manages only the horses assigned to them, including health records, appointments and their own expenses. Helper can record vitals and leave care notes, but not edit health records or see expenses. Emergency Contact can read what is needed in a crisis and change nothing.

I invited someone and they did not get the email

Invitations arrive from BarnKeeper with a link that opens the app. Ask them to check spam, and confirm the address you typed. If it still has not arrived, write to me and I will look at whether it left our end.

Someone left the barn. What happens to their records?

Removing a member ends their access immediately. Anything they entered stays in the barn, because those are the barn's records rather than theirs.

Your records

How do I get my data out?

Open Settings and choose Export Everything. You get a zip file containing all of your records together with every photo and document you have uploaded, in files that open without BarnKeeper. Expenses and horse profiles are also available as spreadsheets.

How do I delete my account?

Settings, then Delete Account. You will be offered the export first, which is worth taking, because deletion cannot be undone. Remember to cancel your subscription in your Apple Account separately.

Why does blanketing suggest what it does?

BarnKeeper looks up the forecast for the town you entered and combines it with what you have told it about each horse, including whether they are clipped and any custom rules you have set. It is a starting point rather than an instruction: you know your horse, your barn and your turnout, and BarnKeeper does not.

Why does it only ask for my town?

A forecast is the same across a whole town, so a town is all BarnKeeper needs and all it keeps. It does not accept or store street addresses, and it never asks for your device's location.

When something is wrong

The app will not let me add anything

Two things stop writing. Either the barn needs a subscription, in which case a banner at the top says so and the plus button appears locked; or your role does not include that action, which the section on roles above explains.

Weather is not loading

Check that a location is set in Settings, and that it is a town, state or postal code that can be found. Forecasts are cached, so a brief loss of signal will not empty the screen.

Something looks broken

Please tell me. A screenshot, the name of the screen, and what you expected to happen are enough for me to work with, and reports from people using the app are how most things get fixed.

Privacy and your information

What BarnKeeper collects and why is set out in full in the Privacy Policy, and the agreement covering your use of the app is in the Terms of Service. If you want to exercise a privacy right, or you simply want to know what is stored about you, write to me at support@barnkeeper.co.

A word about veterinary care

BarnKeeper is a record keeping tool. It is not a veterinarian and it is not a substitute for one. Nothing in the app is a diagnosis or a treatment recommendation, and in an emergency you should call your vet rather than open your phone.
